American Hornbeam Root Cutting

Writer's picture: Ted BentleyTed Bentley

2021 I went down to the river we live on. Gathered a root cutting from a American Hornbeam. I threw it in a big pot of sphagum moss. I swear it was 2020 but iPhone picture date doesn't lie. The night before I was watching Peter Chan on YouTube, like we all do. He was mentioning how easy Hornbeams propagate from cuttings. Well we know what happened next. Pretty sure I did it before work. Like we all do with these projects, I sat and waited. Not really, had other stuff and just kept it watered.

June 8th, I decided to snap a pic of what is going on. Things were happening, it worked!

It wasn't much but it worked. I just left it alone all growing season.left it outside for the winter. Spring 2022 was coming around and I repotted it in a plastic rectangle pot. Cut out most of the old sphagum moss and surrounded with akadama. Decided to wire it.

That pic on the top was from April 13th.

I took the tree to Tennessee for class. Just wanted to discuss it with Bjorn. I trimmed it and left 2 branches to thicken.

View from the back of it.

The tree has been just sitting and taking in sunlight and fertilizer. It's shown some healthy signs. The colors were amazing and leaves were starting to drop. I decided to clean it up and add some wire.

I will be cutting the lower branch that was left on to thicken it. The main branch will be left on maybe one more growing season. A lot of the little branches will be trimmed to 1 or 2 buds.

Thanks

Ted
